Marin Takes Point Trophy at 2008 USRowing Masters National Championships - oh well.

August 18, 2008
source: USRowing (www.usrowing.com)

LONG BEACH, Calif. - Marin Rowing Association took home the trophy for most overall points to highlight the final day of racing at the 2008 USRowing Masters National Championships at Marine Stadium in Long Beach, Calif. The Greenbae, Calif.-based club scored a total of 842.25 points and won national titles in 18 events over the four-day event. Runner-up San Diego Rowing Club scored 774.5 points, followed by Long Beach Rowing Association with 724.5 points. Marin also scored the most points in women's events, with a total of 346.25, while host-club Long Beach Rowing Association scored the most men's points with 475.

"It was great," said Marin rower Beth Travers. "The week has been very interesting. It's fun to be a part of this and I'm thrilled for our club. We didn't bring as many crews as some of the other clubs and we worked hard." Travers, coxed by granddaughter and 2007 U.S. Junior National Team member Chelsea Lucas, stroked her crew to a gold medal finish in the women's G eight.

One of the closest finishes of the day resulted in a gold medal for Marin Rowing Association in the men's club D four with coxswain. The crew of coxswain Jiean Li, Alex Filatov, Mike Stralka, Alan Collenette and Joel Kimmel crossed the line in a 3:38.03 to finish just 0.36 seconds ahead of Capital Rowing Club's 3:38.39. Los Gatos clocked a 3:44.42 for third place, while Potomac followed in fourth with a 3:47.12.

In the mixed E eight, Long Beach Rowing Association edged ahead of the pack to win gold in a 3:33.53. The crew of coxswain Katie Scott, John VanBlom, Steve Nowinski, John Nunn, Peter Rasmussen, Claudia Schneider, Elaine Aber, Sabrina Aris-Guent and Debbi Nowinski crossed 3.21 seconds ahead of second-place San Diego Rowing Club. It was a close margin for the third-place spot, with Sacramento State Aquatic Center Rowing Club finishing in a 3:42.15. Corvallis Rowing Club crossed just 0.39 seconds behind in fourth.

Lake Washington Rowing Club's Byrl Thompson pulled out ahead to win gold in the men's B single sculls, after finishing just 0.17 seconds behind Community Rowing, Inc.'s Rob McGurrin in the second of two morning heats. Thompson clocked a 3:50.91, with Kent Mitchell Rowing Club's Joe Abrams second in a 3:55.67. Rowing unaffiliated, Peter Hein crossed third in a 3:59.34, while McGurrin finished fourth in a 4:03.81

The Saugatuck duo of Eve Green and Sunny McLean won gold in the women's H double sculls, clocking a 4:48.06. Green and McLean finished nearly 14 seconds ahead of second-place Anne Fontanesi and Barbara Smith from Masters Coaching. Lake Merritt Rowing Club's Judy Udove and Marjorie Julian crossed third in a 5:15.85.

In the women's club A quadruple sculls, San Diego Rowing Club finished strong to win gold. The crew of Femke Hoevenaars, Darin Hayden, Johanna Tinimer and Kathleen Crowe crossed in a 3:44.53, with Austin Rowing Club more than a boat length behind in second place with a 3:52.63. Marin Rowing Association clocked a 4:00.13 for third place.

Hosted by USRowing and the Long Beach Rowing Association, the four-day event featured more than 1,200 masters competitors from 83 clubs. Masters rowers range in age from 21 to 83. Located near Alamitos Bay, Marine Stadium is home to the Long Beach Rowing Association and was the site of the 1932 Olympic Games. In recent years, Marine Stadium has hosted a variety of rowing events, including the annual Long Beach Invitational for junior crews and the USRowing Southwest Masters Championships in 2003, 2004 and 2008.
